SEP 12.1.2: Upgrade Clients with Package (how to verify?)

I need a solution

HI all.  I'm testing scenarios for deployment using some systems at a client site.  So far I've only done client installs via copying the setup.exe file from a SEPM package, but I'd really like to try to actually use the automation features.

So, today I tried to push using the Upgrade Clients with Package feature, I believe found under Admin > Install Packages.  This path only allows you to send a package to groups, not to individuals, which was fine so I chose all my Windows 7 64bit clients.  Not one of them showed any signs of being upgraded (remoted into a few of them, no msiexec background process).  Also nothing in Monitors > Command Status.  And after several hours, no actual upgrades took place.

What am I missing here?  I have not gone through the STS training for SEP yet, so maybe this is a basic thing, but these are all clients that are all running 11.x and are reporting in just fine all day long, so client communications are up and running here.

Maybe this feature I'm using just upgrades the package stored on the server, but doesn't actually push installs?  if not, what method should I be using?

Thanks.
